Nine-year-old chanter dazzles

- Society Reporter

AN aspiring nine-year-old chanter, Tawanda “Kancho” Nyatwa, is gradually making waves in the music industry.

The Zimdancehall singer was discovered by DKT Studios while performing the late Soul Jah Love’s cover versions.

Working with the record label, Kancho has so far released four songs namely “Tsomu Tsomu”, “Amai Gody”, “Hello” and “Handichade”.

The budding singer told The Sunday Mail Society that he is heavily influenced by the late chanter.

“I’m very optimistic that one day I will be able to match and even surpass the standards set by Soul Jah Love. He inspired me a lot and I wish to help keep his legacy alive,” said Kancho.

The budding musician is currently in Grade Five at a private college in Harare.

He has on several occasions performed for fellow students.

Music, he added, was not going to distract him from his studies.

“Both school and music are important in my life. Even if you become a successful musician, you still need an education. Thus, with the help of my parents and teachers, I am trying to find a way to balance the two,” he said.

The young and energetic chanter is vocally gifted and a good dancer. Kancho’s father, Clever Nyatwa, said he started noticing his son’s love for music a few years back.

“I realised he could perfectly sing most songs done by the late provincial hero Soul Jah Love. But he did not end there as he also attempted to do his own compositions. It is then that I noticed he had a serious passion for music,” said

Nyatwa.

Unlike other parents, he has been highly supportive of his son’s budding career.

“I am helping to link him up with professionals in the industry. His talent needs to be supported just as much as I support his school-work,” added Nyatwa. “At school, he usually performs during major functions and this is motivating other kids.”
