Comedian Barry Hilton dates Zim

- Andrew Moyo

ONE of the biggest comedy promoters in the country, ExtraTime Entertainment, is back in business after a two-year hiatus.

Having held their first show of the year recently at the Reps Theatre which was headlined by Q Dube, they have already lined up another one to be held on September 3 at the same venue.

This time around, they are collaborating with a local music promotion company to bring in Barry Hilton who is regarded as one of the biggest comics in the region.

The comedian will be bringing his new show “Unscripted” which has seen him touring various European countries including the UK, the Netherlands and Ireland to name a few.

Hilton last performed in the country back in 2016 to a full house at the Reps Theatre.

The iconic venue has proven to be a solid hunting ground for many comedians with most of the shows that have been held there selling out.

Despite the lifting of the Covid-19-induced lockdown, the local comedy scene has been quiet with showbiz being dominated by music events.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail Society ExtraTime director Tongai Mbidzo said despite being away for a long time, they were planning on bringing more laughter to comedy fans with a number of shows lined up.

“We are back and decided to start off with Q who is doing exceptionally well in South Africa and has a new one-man show ‘I wish I was Joking’ which we felt should be brought home,”said South Africa-based Mbidzo.

Their trust in Q to set the ball rolling was repaid in laughter as the comedian managed to put on one of the best performances of his career if comments from some of the attendees are anything to go by.

This seemed to be a different entertainer from the one who last performed in the country a couple of years ago.

From his content which was fresh and relevant to the way he was delivering the jokes, Q set out to crack ribs and managed to do just that as the venue was constantly exploding every time he opened his mouth to speak.

It comes as no surprise that they are bringing back Hilton considering the reception he received last time round and also has a new show which his local fans would also want to experience.

“Barry Hilton is a legend and also has a new show titled ‘Unscripted’ which he has been touring the world with. He finished a Europe tour and is coming to Zim which is a special place for him since he was born there (Zimbabwe).

“Bringing Barry is a no-brainer. He is talented, super funny and delivers clean jokes which makes him a favourite to the Zim comedy audience.

“We know that people love him so we are bringing him back.

“The other thing is that he is very professional and enjoys nurturing new talent. He has played a pivotal role in the success of Long John after they met at our show in 2016 and agreed to mentor him.”
