Experience the beauty of humility

Has not always been admired because some regard it as a sign of weakness.

HUMILITY

Others associate it with defeat and insecurities. However, you can still be confident and proficient, yet humble. Pope Francis once said: “The world tells us to seek success, power and money, God tells us to seek humility, service and love.”

Organisational Status

What then should we pursue? Acquiring both is one of the greatest achievements one can ever have in life. Humility is not an event; it has to be a way of life.

A significant number of managers or bosses are not known for lifting their teams up, but for what they possess and what they flash out in their boastful nature to their teams.

Some bosses are also known for exercising their power in ways that do not build teams because they tend to focus on themselves rather than the team.

There is need to understand that in life, almost every person you meet is likely to know something you don’t. This simply means every subordinate is likely to know something that can be very useful to the organisation.

However, subordinates get to express themselves more if the boss allows them to do so.

Yes, being a boss comes with superiority in one way or the other but it doesn’t mean you know it all. You also need to learn from your subordinates. Avoid having an ego that is tied to your position such that when your position falls, your ego falls with it.

Boastful characters may not be able to see where growth or change are needed hence, in the process, they get replaced or things may fall apart.

Humility is more than just absence of pride.

Be approachable, helpful, kind, have a listening ear and learn to lift others up in the best ways you can within your spheres of influence.

The more you lift others, the more you are likely to lift yourself. If your team is doing well, it means you are also doing well.

General Facts

Humble people know how to accept constructive criticism, knowing there is always room for improvement at any level you might be in life. Being eager to learn, regardless of what you know, is humility.

According to Zig Ziglar, humility will open more doors than arrogance ever will. Being humble gives you the ability to value other people’s opinions, views and feelings, and at the end of the day you will have a broad perspective of life, which gives you good balance when handling challenges. In most cases, many people think they are humble until a humbling experience takes place.

Life has a way of humbling people. It is often easier to choose to humble yourself rather than to be forced to do so by circumstances.

I know of people who committed suicide because they were not able to deal with humbling situations that life had thrown at them. This is so sad. Sometimes, just when you think you have it altogether and as you enjoy your comfort zone, life takes a different twist of fate and humbles you.

One author once said: “To share your weakness is to make yourself vulnerable but to make yourself vulnerable is to share your strength.”

Be humble enough to know that even in areas that you are thriving, you are not better than everyone else.

Do not take it too hard if a humbling experience happens to you.

Understand that whatever you are going through, you are not the first and neither will you be the last.

Speak out and allow those who can to lift you up.

Being humble can be taught but staying humble requires true self and it is a decision and a choice that one has to make. The tallest and strongest buildings are those with firm foundations.

Humility is like the foundation of success. Staying humble when the world calls you great is indeed greatness. The higher you go is the lower you need to deepen your roots.

Humility has many benefits. Avoid looking down on others. What if life humbles you to levels you despise? Be challenged, encouraged and inspired to lead a humble life.
