Mushangazhike eyes Axis Cup success

-

GOLDEN Eagles coach Gilbert Mushangazhike, who thinks his side “punched above its weight” in the just-ended season, is itching to guide his team to Axis Solutions Super 8 Cup glory.

“Gondo Harishaye” finished third in the Ruyamuro Northern Region Soccer League championship race despite starting the season on a high.

They led the log standings for the better part of the season before fizzling out towards the end.

They ended the season behind Herentals Under-20 and champions Simba Bhora.

Mushangazhike, who replaced Joel Lupahla during the season, now wants to salvage some pride when his charges clash against Simba Bhora in the Axis Solutions Super 8 Cup final at Rufaro Stadium on Saturday.

It’s a highly anticipated clash, given the quality and competitiveness the two teams exhibited during their clashes this season.

Simba Bhora won 3-1 at Wadzanai, before the two sides played a 1-1 draw at Ellis Robins in what was one of the best matches of the season.

As a former Warriors striker, Mushangazhike is experienced enough to know that cup games are unpredictable.

“Every team wants to win, but we see this game as an opportunity to win silverware for our team, our faithful fans and sponsors, who stood by us throughout the season,” Mushangazhike told The Sunday Mail Sport.

A huge crowd is expected at Rufaro Stadium for the final.

Gate charges have since been raised to US$5 given the magnitude of the game.

Various musicians will perform during the event.

Simba Bhora are targeting a league and cup double that would see them etching their name in Northern Region football history.

They have experienced players like Hardlife Zvirekwi, Brighton Tuwaya, Ali Sadiki and keeper Simba Chinani.

In top scorer Tinashe Balakasi, Simba Bhora also have a deadly weapon that could destroy Golden Eagles.

The trio of Zvirekwi, Balakasi and Webster Tafa were selected among the best 11 players for the 2021/2022 season.

However, Eagles have two star players – Henry Manatsa and Trevor Bhunu – who also made it onto the calendar.

“We respect Simba Bhora. They are the champions after all,” said Mushangazhike.

“But, heading into this game, we can’t be fixated on the opponent.

“Rather, we are focusing on ourselves, our processes, preparing well and giving ourselves the best shot at victory,” he said.

Despite failing to win the league title in a season which they dominated for the better part, Mushangazhike is actually happy with his team’s third-place finish.

“Considering it was our maiden season in the division, we actually punched above our weight and are better for the experience.

“We are looking forward to next season, and come pre-season, we will begin the hard work that hopefully will ensure an even better season. “Football is an unpredictable game, but we will ensure we give ourselves the best chance next season.”
