Youths, girl-child voices important

- JUSTICE ADVOCATE

e media has been used since time immemorial as one of the most effective ways of disseminating information to a wider audience. Citizen involvement has had a greater impact in community development and nation building. e media alone has played a pivotal role and the inclusion of the youth and the girl child has helped in providing a safer space and making their voices heard.

Youths constitutes a higher percentage of the population in Zimbabwe hence it is of importance for the media to include the youths and the girl child from the grassroots level. Young people are the future of tomorrow and they are greatly affected by socio-economic issues. All their issues can be addressed well through the media. It is vital to air out views and stand for what is right as we try to curb socio-economic issues which include inequalities.

Youths and the girl child have always been left out in issues that affect them and they could not speak out. eir voices must be amplified to ensure that they get a space in decision-making whilst speaking and standing for themselves. Youths and the girl child need to be involved in platforms like the resource governance indabas, public hearings on constitutional amendments and bills etc. is enables the youths to participate in decision-making processes, thereby, assisting in nation building and development.

When the media includes young people, it gives opportunities to everyone making it easier to access correct information that will help them in their day-to-day lives and also enhance their abilities to address their socio-economic issues. Young girls and the youths are historically disadvantaged due to the society we grew up in, therefore, the media will give the much-needed reparations and close the gaps between the young and old and the women and men. Exposure contributes to positive development whilst developing self-esteem thus one can speak firmly on an issue to be addressed.

In a nutshell, let us bear in mind that the media plays an important role as a way of including the girl child and youths. e youths are the future of tomorrow and the girl child should be empowered to be an independent woman. Every citizen has a right to express how they feel and to be involved in nation building and development.

Inclusion of the youth and girl child contributes in the development of the nation thereby enhancing the economic growth of the country. e issues of the youths and girl child should be addressed with correct information to the affected rather than having the elderly speaking for them.

As the media strives to play an important role, it is high time the media, youths and girl child merge to address their issues and amplify their voices such that they are heard. e youth and girl child are citizens, they are the leaders of tomorrow thus they deserve to have a say in all the developmental processes from the grassroots level to national.
