Nadia Nakai represents Zim at hip-hop awards

THE nomination­s for the 2022 BET HipHop Awards have been revealed, and Nadia Nakai (pictured above) is representi­ng Zimbabwe in the Best Internatio­nal Flow category along with other African rappers like Ghana’s Black Sheif and Blxckie from South Africa.

Other artists in the category from different parts of the world include Central Cee who represents the United Kingdom, Haviah Mighty representi­ng Canada, Knucks from the UK, Le Juiice from France and Tasha & Tracie from Brazil.

Other African artists nominated at the hip-hop awards include Nigerian artist Tems, who received two nods for Song of the Year and Best Collaborat­ion for her appearance on US rapper Future’s Wait For U, featuring Drake and Burna Boy, who is up for Video Director of the Year award for Last Last. is puts Zimbabwe hip-hop on the map though Nadia Nakai identifies herself as a

South African with Zimbabwean heritage.

Per Wikipedia, Nadia Nakai Kandava was born in South Africa to a Zimbabwean mother and a South African father. She switched to her Zimbabwean mother’s last name at 16. She signed a record deal with Def Jam back in 2020 and also appeared earlier in the year on Netflix’s Young Famous and African.

e awards show, hosted by Fat Joe, will return this year for the 17th time on October 4.

Drake leads with a total of 14 nomination­s and Kanye West is closely behind with 10 nods, including for Hip-Hop Artist of the Year, while Kendrick Lamar has also garnered nine nomination­s in total. Other top nominees this year include Future with eight nods, and Baby Keem, Cardi B and J Cole with six each. Other notable nominees this year include Doja Cat, Latto, Lil Durk, Tems, and Young ug with three nomination­s each. — Greedy South.
