No. 5 seeded Pitt men’s soccer team advances

The No. 5 seed Pitt men’s soccer team advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament with a 5-2 victory Sunday against visiting Northern Illinois.

The NCAA postseason victory at home is the second in program history. The Panthers improved their overall record to 12-5-1 and will host Hofstra at a time and date to be determined.

“We are very excited about the win tonight,” said head coach Jay Vidovich.

“We had a tremendous opponent who tested us early in both half’s. I was proud of the way we responded after [NIU] goals and the resiliency and the ability to take the lead and hold out for the rest of the game.

“I thought it was a great result for us.”

Sophomore Bertin Jacquesson tallied a goal and three assists for Pitt. His single-game assist total tied an NCAA tournament record and also tied his career mark set last season. The five points in the match were also a career-high for the Frenchman.

Five different Panthers scored and the team as a whole recorded six assists.

Leketor Member-Meneh and Chinaza Ndee combined for 20 kills and zero errors to lead the No. 3 Pitt women’s volleyball team (26-2, 15-2 ACC) to a sweep at Clemson (12-16, 3-13). Pitt cruised to the sweep by scores of 25-18, 25-19, 25-12.

• Pitt swimming and diving concluded the Ohio State Invitation­al by setting three school records and earning 17 NCAA qualifying cuts, 12 swimming and five diving, at one of college

swimming’s most competitiv­e midseason meets.

• No. 15 Penn State women’s volleyball fell to 199 overall and 12-6 in the Big Ten with a 3-1 (25-23, 22-25, 2511, 25-20) loss to host No. 10 Ohio State. The Buckeyes improved to 23-5 overall and 13-5 in the conference.

Tennis

Alexander Zverev beat the top two players in consecutiv­e matches to earn his second title at the ATP Finals. After eliminatin­g No. 1 Novak Djokovic over three sets in the semifinals, the thirdranke­d German put on a dominant performanc­e in

the final in Turin, Italy, beating No. 2 Daniil Medvedev, 6

4, 6-4.

Soccer

Sebastian Blanco scored the go-ahead goal and added an insurance score as the host Portland Timbers eliminated Minnesota United from the MLS playoffs with a 3-1 opening-round victory. The fourth-seeded Timbers advanced to play the topseeded Rapids in Colorado on Thanksgivi­ng Day.

• Valentín Castellano­s and Alexander Callens scored less than four minutes apart early in the second half and New York City FC beat visiting fifth seeded Atlanta United, 2-0. Fourth-seeded NYCFC will play at Supporters Shield winner New England on Nov. 30.

Auto racing

Lewis Hamilton inched closer to the Formula One championsh­ip lead with a dominating victory in the inaugural Qatar Grand Prix in Losail, to earn back-to-back wins and chip away at Max Verstappen’s points advantage.

Winter sports

Petra Vlhova got the better of Mikaela Shiffrin for the second time in two days, winning another women’s World Cup slalom in Finnish Lapland. The overall World Cup champion from Slovakia ultimately beat her American rival by .47 of a second.

• Germany swept a pair of World Cup bobsled races in Igls, Austria, with Francesco Friedrich winning in the four-man race and Laura Nolte driving to the victory in the women’s event.

Boxing

Terrence Crawford stopped Shawn Porter in the 10th round by technical knockout late Saturday night in Las Vegas in one of the most anticipate­d bouts of the year. Crawford (38-0) retained his WBO welterweig­ht title at Mandalay Bay.
