7 000 ARRESTED OVER DRUGS

POLICE have arrested over 7 000 people for drug-related offences since January and seized an assortment of drugs totalling $38 million.

National police spokespers­on Assistant Commission­er Paul Nyathi said the security organ had stepped up operations against drug peddling and other related crimes.

“From January 2021, police arrested 7 263 suspects for drugs related offences during that period, 1 013,024 kilogramme­s, 1 143 plants of dagga, 6,04 kilogramme­s of cocaine, 1 331 x 100 ml bottles of Bronclear, 17 323 kilogramme­s of Crystal Methamphet­ine, 1241, 33 kilogramme­s of Elphedrine, 41x100m1 bottles of Histalix, various skin lightening creams and unregister­ed medicines, all valued at $38 206 058, were recovered,” Ass Comm Nyathi said.

Ass Comm Nyathi said the police arrested a woman in Bulawayo following a tip off.

“On 24th November 2021, Police arrested Nomsa Sharon Ndebele (25) in Bulawayo for possession of 1.450 kilogramme­s of dagga at Sizane bus stop,” he said.

“Following a tip-off from members of the public, police recovered two packs of loose dagga in two separate plastic bags from the suspect.”

“In another case, on 23 November 2021, police in Bulawayo arrested Sithokozil­e Dube (33) for

possession of 0,003 kilogramme­s of Crystal Methamphet­amine.

“The drugs were hidden underneath the bed, upon noticing that she had been cornered by detectives, the suspect refused to cooperate and was exposed by the recovery.

Ass Comm Nyathi added: “On 22 November 2021, police arrested Arnold Kuzakwenha­mo (37) for possession of 0.004 kilogramme­s of cocaine in Mpopoma, Bulawayo.”

“The suspect was arrested after a tip-off from the public and upon noticing that he had been surrounded by detectives, the suspect sped off in a navy blue Subaru vehicle registrati­on number ADF 6540.

“A high-speed chase ensued, the suspect was later arrested while hiding in a toilet after his vehicle had been involved in a road traffic accident.

“Two sachets of cocaine were recovered while hidden in the suspect’s pants

and two more sachets were recovered in the vehicle.”

Ass Comm Nyathi urged the public to report all drug peddling activities in communitie­s at any nearest police station, including activities of drug lords who supply illicit substances to both the youths and adults.

OTHER CRIMES

POLICE in Epworth are investigat­ing a case of murder which occurred in Overspill on 29/11/21 at 1300 hours, where a man (39) was attacked by 10 unidentifi­ed suspects led by one only known as Praise. The suspects threw stones to merry makers at a party thereby injuring several people and later stabbed the victim with a knife after the party. The victim sustained two deep stab wounds on the upper buttocks close to the spine and was pronounced dead upon arrival at a local clinic.

THE ZRP confirms arrest of a Chitungwiz­a man (25) for raping a fellow tenant (18) on 23/11/21. The suspect dragged the victim from a dining room to another room where he raped her and threatened the woman not to reveal the matter.

The victim later revealed her ordeal to her former teacher who assisted her to report. Meanwhile, the ZRP urges the public to report all cases of rape to the police.

THE ZRP is concerned with bus operators who are openly flouting Covid-19 curfew order, which runs from 2200hrs - 0530 hours, thereby promoting smuggling acts by some travellers and risk the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic yet borders are still closed by the Government for general travellers.

On 28/11/21 at about 2230 hours, a MBT bus with 66 occupants destined for Beitbridge was attacked by three unknown suspects who pretended to be passengers and armed with two unidentifi­ed pistols and a knife at 86km peg along Harare-Masvingo Road. The suspects shot two people in the bus, stabbed another and stole cash worth US$7 367 & ZAR 167 050.

Meanwhile, police will arrest anyone breaching Covid-19 regulation­s without fear or favour and the law will surely take its course. The police is now investigat­ing the robbery incident.

THE ZRP urges members of the public to report all cases of rape to the police. On 21/11/21 a disabled woman aged 40 was raped by a suspect (19) in Highfield.

The victim’s relatives caught and assaulted the suspect, who later escaped, and they did not file a police report.

The matter only came to light after police received a tip-off from concerned citizens.
