Deltaforce Academy to host all-female boxing showcase

- Shelly Guni

DELTAFORCE Boxing Academy are set to host an all-female tournament on March 25, this year.

The tournament, dubbed ‘Knock Out Girl Child Abuse’ will be held at the Harare International Conference Centre.

A total of 10 bouts have been lined up for the day with the main fight set to be between Zvikomborero Dadzwa of Deltaforce and Patience Mastara of Turfbul Boxing Club.

The two will be battling for the vacant ABU Bantamweight Southern Africa title.

This will be the first time in Zimbabwean history, in which the entire card will feature only female boxers.

“I think this is a great initiative, because if we look at it this way, almost every day you will hear of a story of a girl child who has been abused,” said Deltaforce Boxing Academy director, Clyde Musonda.

“I’m not saying only girls are abused, boys too can be abused, but the rate at which our girl child is abused is worrisome.

“That is why we have come up with this tournament, to raise our voice against that and while we are also promoting the female boxers and officials, we thought it would be great if we fight in the girls’ corner.

“We are really expecting a great fighting night.

“And, we are calling on all sponsors, who want to partner with us, to make this day a success.”

Boxing in Zimbabwe has been on the rise.

This has seen many boxing clubs being formed, giving room to all upcoming boxers to, at least, have a stable they belong to.

Meanwhile, Musonda said his boxer, Kuda Chiwandire, was still in good shape ahead of his WBC Gold super-bantamweight title fight against Zambian Catherine Phiri on February 26 in Lusaka, Zambia.

Chiwandire, a rising female boxer, is on the verge of becoming the first Zimbabwean to compete for the World Boxing Council gold title.
