NEWSROOMS AND IDEOLOGY
Last Sunday, María O’Donnell inter- viewed both Robert Cox and Jayson McNamara regarding the closure of the
Buenos Aires Her al dan da documentar y to be released next week on its heroic achievements, Messenger on a White
Horse. The full interview can be seen here: https://youtu.be/Dv34-vz1Gag
In a short but very interesting conversation they clarified why the story of the
Herald during the last dictatorship is so relevant today. They all agreed that journalism is in crisis worldwide, because ideology prevails in newsrooms. And the
Herald’s success story derives from having been exactly the opposite.
Moreover, that “great little newspaper” followed the Anglo-Saxon tradition of questioning those in power. They also pointed out that what’s remarkable about the Herald is that, even being a small newspaper staffed by foreign journalists and targeted to the English-speaking community in our country, it received international recognition.
Now the general public will be able to see this excellent documentary – centred on Bob Cox – which also highlights the risks taken by both Herald editors and staff during the last dictatorship. Already available with Perfil every Saturday is the Buenos Aires Times, where former Herald editors and staff continue delighting us with journalism at its best. Ildefonso Miguel Thomsen City
