TENNIS: 2018 Argentina Open
The 2018 Argentina Open, the 21st edition of the ATP Buenos Aires event, began on Monday and as this page went to print, the quarterfinal ties were scheduled to begin.
Guillermo Garcia-López beat second-seed Spanish countryman Pablo Carreño Busta 7-6 (5), 1-6, 7-6 (6) on Thursday to reach the quarters. Garcia-López faces local player Federico Delbonis, a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6) winner over Portugal’s Gastão Elias in the clay-court event.
France’s Gael Monfils and Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer will meet another quarter-final. Monfils beat Dusan Lajovi of Serbia 6-4, 6-3, and Mayer stopped fourth-seed Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-3, 6-3.
The other ties had been decided on Wednesday when Austria’s Dominic Thiem set up a quarter-final clash against local favourite Guido Pella. Thiem, the top seed, beat Argentina’s Horacio Zeballos 6-4, 6-3 on Wednesday in the ATP 250 clay-court tournament. Pella topped Spain’s Fernando Verdasco 6-2, 6-4.
Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman also advanced, beating Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. He will face Slovenia’s Aljaz Bedene, a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 winner over third-seed Albert Ramos Viñolas of Spain.
