LET’S REPEAT HISTORY
It is true that, at present, lots of those who voted for Cambiemos are deeply disappointed with this government’s performance. There are sufficient reasons for this, starting with the fact that, at the beginning of its term, it did not give the populace a comprehensive report on the mountain of problems inherited from the Kirchernite-era. Afterwards, matters were complicated by the comings and goings of the economic measures, as well as regarding other issues.
To boot, here in Buenos Aires City a lot of irritation occurs due to the ridiculous order of priorities Horacio Rodríguez Larreta has imprinted on his management, while on a national scale the “betrayal” regarding Bienes Personales and other taxes is severely annoying, in particular, the middle class.
And yet I can’t help being mildly optimistic. Personally I believe that the present recession (though very hard) will be relatively short, that the degree of inflation will be considerably reduced in the next two to three months, and that by May or June there will be relevant signs of revitalisation in the macroeconomy, thanks to various factors such as agriculture, energy, and also a sharp boom of incoming tourism. It has to be seen, afterwards, at what speed this filters down to the microeconomy, something that’s very important considering the upcoming elections next October.
But in any case, I beg one and all to put aside their darkest premonitions, so that they don’t contribute to a self-fulfilling prophecy. The panorama around the world is far from being pleasant nowadays and, believe it or not, Argentina is fundamentally in better condition to face the future than many other countries you would believe are in better shape.
So let yourself not be carried away by pessimism. Although we see so many unpleasant occurences every day, we shall strive forwards, It certainly wasn’t easy going in the last quarter of the 19th century, and yet in those days Argentina was able to climb to the top of the world.
With the proper spirit we shall be able to repeat history!
