VOTE MACRI AGAIN? OUT OF THE QUESTION?

Many persons whom I know, who voted for Macri in 2015, are furious with him and utterly disappointed with his government. So much so that they emphatically declare that they will definitely not vote for him again in the coming elections.

No doubt we are going through a very difficult moment, when most people are either struggling hard to make it till the end of the month or, having reserves, see that they are gradually eating them up. Besides, lots of jobs havebeenlostandmanycompanies and stores have folded. Beyond any doubt our authorities have done a poor job with our economy, especially by not informing the public right at the beginning about the terrible shape our finances were in, and that we all had to tighten our belts in the first half of the term if we wanted to see things really improve in the second. Add to this the drought, the drop in the price of commodities and, worst of all, the small proportion of government legislators in Congress, and the result ends up being way below what were our expectations.

Still, what many do not yet know is that they finally will be voting for Macri once again, even if with clenched teeth. And they won’´t be doing so because of the valuable amount of public works finished or in the making, neither because we are once again well connected internationally, or because of so many other aspects where the performance has been really good. No, no, the reason that they will eat their words is that, in the final instance, they will understand that the “Helicopter Club,” which comprises those who continue to seek the government´s fall before the elections, is still hard at work. The strike this week, principally promoted by our local Jimmy Hoffa and his family, benefits no one except the mafiosi who want to grab control of the reins of power once again, and these people are going to do everything they can to make life as uncomfortable as possible, from hereon till October.

So, come election day, the despirited and disappointed ex-Macri voters, alerted once again to the populist danger, will to a very great extent join those of us who proclaim that “IT’S THE REPUBLIC, CARAJO!” and put the right piece of paper in the ballot box.

Harry Ingham City MESSY RATHER THAN MESSI

Former United States President, Barack Obama, has hit the nail on the head this week: “Argentina fails to win the World Cup even with Lionel Messi because they do not play as a team.”

In plain words, he has described one of our major historical difficulties as a nation: we are not a team, we lack team spirit, at all levels, in all areas. We find it hard to join forces, to put aside our egos and personal interests. This is quite obvious nowadays, as we watch the petty struggles inside the political parties, in view of the forthcoming presidential elections. Theirs is a nauseous Vanity Fair.

You’re damn right, Mr Obama: as individuals, we’re great, we’re all Messis; as a society we utterly fail, we’re messy (if you allow me the pun). Sigh.

Irene Bianchi Ringuelet, La Plata www.irenebianchi.com.ar VOLUNTARY REFINANCE OF THE DEBT

The “renta financiera” tax is hated by the bondholders. Why doesn’t the goverment offer to the holders of LETES and bonds maturing fron 2020 to 2022 a new bond maturing on 2025 and exempt from the “renta financiera” tax? It would be a voluntary way of refinancing a short-term debt into a longterm debt.

Best regards Luis Spallarossa City BATTLE OF THE BULGE: PART XLVII Dear Sirs,

‘John Sunday‘ once famously stated that when it appeared that the ‘Peronistas‘ were fighting they were really procreating! Looks as if it might be true, judgingbytherecentanticsofSergio Massa. Is he really waiting for the former Lady President to stand down, in his favour, so that he may lead a renewed and invigorated Peronist Party to glory, in the forthcoming presidential elections, cum October/November next? Some hope!

Meanwhile, it does seem that in the wake of a quiescent dollar and improved level of international grain prices, economic prospects appears to be improving, as domestic inflation moderates and both fiscal and trade figures move into the black. Surely the incumbent authorities will now trumpet: ‘Macro, Micro....and Macri!!!’

Best wishes,
