BIENALSUR 2019 OPENS THIS WEEKEND IN BUENOS AIRES
TheItalianEmbassyinArgentinainconjunction withtheInternationalContemporaryArtBiennial of South America (BIENALSUR) will exhibit a new work by Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto for the first time today called Il tondo delle otto porte (The eight-door round).
The work, which will form a part of the “Circuito Pistoletto” (Pistoletto Circuit) in Buenos Aires, will be open to the public beginning tomorrow and will be exhibited in the gardens of the Italian embassy.
Pistoletto is one of the most famous figures of Arte Povera, – literally “poor art” – a contemporary art movement that makes use of unconventional processes and nontraditional, common materials – such as newspapers, which Pistoletto has used – to subvert the commercialisation of art. The Italian artist is known for his use of reflection, frequently painting on mirrors.
The Circuito Pistoletto will be an “artistic journey to spaces intervened” by the Italian artist, according to a press release by BIENALSUR about the event. The Circuit will begin at the National Museum of Decorative Art, then will head to the National Museum of Fine Arts, the Hotel de Inmigrantes and will conclude its run in the Benito Quinquela Martín Museum in La Boca.
BIENALSUR is a global art exhibition that occurs every two years that seeks to “simultaneously connect the public from the five continents,” in “collaboration that erases distances and borders and upholds singularity in diversity.” Organised by the National University of Tres de Febrero, BIENALSUR has organised exhibitions in 84 venues, 32 cities and 16 countries. The first edition took place in 2016 and its current edition will last from now until October.
Il tondo delle otto porte will be revealed today, June 22, at 11:30am at the residence of the Italian Ambassador to Argentina. The event is invite-only and is closed to the public but the piece will be open to the public beginning Sunday on select dates and hours which will be announced.
