off explosions, so we shot a large portion of the plates in Atlanta on the backlot.”

A low-tech approach was utilised to navigate the individual confrontations taking place. “We had all of the characters in their toy form that we would put on the table and track a fight. You know what powers offset characters. Vision is almost all powerful but magic can defeat him. If you restrain Wanda’s wrists that let her cast her magic you can defeat her. We did something great with War Machine who is bulked up like a tank, and has the armaments to go along with that so is able to showcase what he can do,” says Dan.

A fun shot in this sequence is Ant-man riding an arrow at Iron Man. “We always had the idea that we wanted to put Ant-man on the arrow,” recalls Dan. “It’s iconic from the comics. But what derived from the rules in terms of matching the superheroes’ powers, is that Hawkeye should not be able to shoot Iron Man with an arrow if he’s paying attention. So it was, ‘OK, how can we hit Tony?’ When the arrow is launched it splits into multiple warheads that go shooting around Tony distracting him so that the last arrow to come in is the one Ant-man is riding and he jumps off and slips into the armour.”

Another dramatic sequence features Steve Rogers grabbing hold of a helicopter landing skid, which had practical help provided by special effects supervisor Dan Sudick. “We rented a trailer that was on a motion base and Dan The technique was primarily the same, but the challenges were different. In the previous film, most of the shots were outdoors. In Civil War, most of the shots take place indoors and in close proximity to other actors. Black Panther debuts in this movie and his suit caused a few issues for the CG team. The suit is made of vibranium threads woven through the cloth and, similar to Captain America’s shield, it can absorb shockwaves. “In terms of getting that specular quality to the cloth, it was difficult as nine times out of 10 you end up with something which is black with a sheen that looks like a wetsuit,” says Dan. New character Spider-man also had his share of stumbling blocks, notably with animation. But the actor brought a new angle
