01 Acquire INITIAL reference

When creating a fantastical creature it is always good to start broadly with sketches or basic sculpts, allowing for quick visual brainstorming and versioning. In this case we have been handed an existing design. The monster already appeared in a print campaign, where it was only viewed from the front. We are tasked with making our monster look more realistic while not veering too far from the original idea. Our monster has to be 60 feet tall and interact with live action elements in a commercial. It also has to be viewable from every conceivable angle. So, we will treat the print campaign as our sketch.
