■ FIVE STEPS TO GET YOUR MODELLING ZEN ON!

-

Customise everything

You can assign custom keyboard shortcuts, as well as any function to a mouse button. You can set custom colours for the entire UI or even design your own interface with custom button images and positioning, down to mimicking the UI of the other applications in your pipeline.

(re)learn to select

To speed up your workflow even more, learn how to quickly jump between selection modes: A for Vertex Selection, S for Edge Selection, D for Face Selection, G for Multiple Selections, F for Object Selection.

reduce Clickage

Reduce mouse clickage and keystrokes by using sticky keys and selection highlighting. Unlike tapping a key or key combination and escape to release it, holding a key – making it sticky – will give a different effect, especially for many toggle functions. Try this with a bevel: hover over an edge, poly or vert, press and hold the bevel shortcut key (B) and slide your cursor to adjust the amount. Don’t click! Release the key when your bevel is at the desired width.

get Loopy

Remember to hit the Edge Selection button at the bottom of the UI to start working with splitting loops. The easiest command is to select two loops, and press Shift+x to split them. Holding Shift+x as a sticky key allows you to continue splitting your edges. Silo will bevel your split loops if contiguous edges are selected, like two opposite edges on a cube. You can also use Face Selection to select your loops, and manipulate them from there. Remember to select at least two adjacent faces.

displacement export

When you export a mesh with displacement from Silo into i.e. Substance Painter, you need to remember the following: the displacement painting is not part of the mesh as such, so you need to export a Normal, and/or a Displacement map. You can do this by selecting your object, and then selecting Generate Normal Map under Uvs/materials.
