Step by Step Create A SHOE TREAD IN ZBRUSH

-

01 Start by Creating Some Clean UVS

Even though we are creating quick details here, it’s important not to rush through the UV creation stage, as this is an essential step for creating a clean result. Generally I will also add some support loops to my mesh to avoid any distortion as well.

In this instance I am using Maya for my UVS, but you can use your preferred app of choice.

02 Create your ALPHA In Photoshop

As previously mentioned, how you go about creating the alpha is entirely up to you. The more time you can spend, the better the result. I opted for a very quick approach; I found a basic tread pattern online and cleaned it up by hand painting and using the contrast tools in Photoshop. Once complete, export it as either a flattened PSD or a JPEG. I would recommend the flattened PSD file.

03 Import Into Zbrush And Create An ALPHA

With our alpha now ready, bring it into Zbrush and make it into an alpha. Go to Texture>import and bring in your image. Be aware that Zbrush flips images in the V direction, so click the ‘Flip V’ button to correct the orientation. Finally, in the Texture menu click on Make Alpha. This will transfer it to the Alpha palette on the left side of the interface, ready to be used as a mask.

04 APPLY the ALPHA AS A MASK And Add the detail

We are now ready to apply our mask. Before we do that, make sure that you have subdivided your mesh enough to allow for a clean result. Go to Masking>mask by Alpha, and our shoe will now have the image masked out on it. Now go to Deformation>inflate and enter your desired value – I used 5 in my example but your mileage may vary. Now we have our completed shoe tread.
