Dell UltraSharp UP3216Q

A stunning monitor with an equally stunning price tag.

-

For many people, the price of this display will stun and leave them puzzled. These are typically the people that aren’t informed by the needs and wants of the specific target market of the product. Even so, with tax incentives in mind for professional user purchases of this display, it’s still a steep price.

Yet savvy buyers will note the regular sales on Dell’s website that wipe a few hundred dollars off the price tag when buying direct. Even savvier buyers will be aware the unit can be had for about $1,800 in the IT channel market. Meaning there are options to get around what might be perceived as a cost barrier for this impressive display.

The UP3216Q boasts complete 100% Adobe RGB gamut coverage and is the only unit in the roundup to do so, though not without a premium. This coverage is achieved through the implementation of a 10-bit panel with a 16-bit LUT, delivering significant granularity to the 1.07 billion colours.

Though a little perplexed at first that this unit did not have OSD RGB adjustment, it proved unnecessary in both out-of-the-box colour replication and during colour calibration. The UP3216Q delivered a CIE2000 maximum Delta-E of 1.07 and extremely tidy display uniformity with the highest luminance delta a mere 2%! However, what we weren’t impressed with were the black levels, delivering a poor result with only the 10th box in the black level test being distinguishable.

If it wasn’t for the black levels, the UP3216Q would have ticked all the boxes for a professional display.
