European Parliament debates giving robots human rights
THE MACHINE, THE ELECTRONIC MAN.
A proposal has been approved by the Legal Affairs Committee of the European Parliament to control the future of robotics, which requires all robots to have kill switches for emergencies, have insurance (much like car insurance) and, if robots take on more human jobs, to pay taxes. It was also proposed that advance, sentient robots be given human-like status, or be considered “electronic persons”. The proposal will now be reviewed by the European Commission. SS
