Austrian hotel guests locked out of rooms by ransomware

While hotel key cards are both convenient (you can slip it into your wallet) and better for security (can be cancelled or recoded after a guest checks out), we’d be surprised to hear if you told us you’d never had a problem with getting your door to open with one. Well, a whole hotel recently had issues when cybercrimi­nals hacked the Romantik Seehotel Jägerwirt computer system and locked all the doors to the guest rooms. Luckily for the resort, the hackers were less interested in stealing credit card and personal details of the guests, but simply demanded approximat­ely AU$2,100 in exchange for unlocking the system. After a second hack was attempted, the managing director said they would be returning to “old-fashioned door locks with real keys. Just like 111 years ago...”
