WD Green PC SSD (M.2 SATA) 240GB
WD enters the fracas with a price-conscious offering.
The WD Green SATA M.2 SSD is a budget solution. This unit is best used as an HDD replacement for older systems and a way to bridge an upgrade cycle with the performance benefits of moving to a solid state drive — namely the ‘snappy feeling’ that an SSD delivers compared to an HDD when placed in an otherwise tired PC that has already done its fair share of computing. With the usage case clear and well understood, the WD Green comes in only two capacities — 120GB and 240GB. Larger sizes, though possible, aren’t available in this product line due to the significant influence of price within the mind of the target market. Though it would be possible to create larger drives, the target market isn’t looking for these. And with a 240GB drive available for $120, it’s easy to understand the approach taken by WD. The WD Green could find itself well suited to the light workloads of a typical HTPC where a small capacity SSD is sufficient and performance doesn’t hold a significant influence on experience.
