In figures reported by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) and the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ACORN), Australians were fleeced of at least $300 million by scams throughout the course of 2016. The most successful rorts were investment scams, followed closely by dating scams, which raked in $59 million and $42 million, respectively. “What is most concerning is that we are seeing scams getting nastier than ever before,” said ACCC deputy Delia Rickard, “there are a lot more threat-based scams targeting vulnerable people.”
