Windows 7 the hardest hit
Research from security firm Kaspersky indicates that more than 98% of affected Windows devices were on some form of Windows 7. While that might sound as though Windows Defender has some explaining to do, it’s unclear at this stage how many of those devices had thirdparty malware protection installed. Since Microsoft has admitted that Defender should not be solely relied upon — and wouldn’t have worked anyway, since it only protects against spyware — some blame must be laid at the feet of individual users and companies for failing to update and/or protect themselves.
