ASUS VX24AH

A 24-incher designed for both work and play.

-

As nice as it would be to have a dedicated gaming monitor, most of us also use our computers for loads of other tasks. As a compromise, the ASUS VX24AH skips some of the more hardcore gaming qualities without going too far. The 23.8-inch screen has a high 2K (2,560 x 1,440) resolution, and uses an IPS panel. This mean it has wide viewing angles, and can display 100% of the sRGB colour spectrum. While it does not support higher refresh rates or adaptive sync, the monitor still has a low 5ms response time.

Those wanting to gain every split-second FPS advantage should look elsewhere, but for normal gaming, the VX24AH performs quite well. It also has a bunch of gamingfocused features, such as a dedicated game mode, on screen crosshair and timer. The monitor needs a reasonable powerful GPU to drive it at 60fps at native resolution, but it also has built-in downscaling to run as a lower resolution for taxing games.

The monitor has no real issues with ghosting or tearing during fast paced action, and the game mode helps highlight dark areas.

The image quality is excellent, with rich vibrant colours and a very even backlight. It also has a flicker free backlight, and a blue light filter, to help ease eye strain.

Round the back, the monitor has dual HDMI ports, VGA and a 3.5mm jack. The stand has the basic tilt adjustment, and the internal speakers are serviceable if a bit tinny.

Verdict

Excellent image quality and feature set from a monitor that successfully handles work and play.
