NOTHING BUT PRAISE (WELL, ALMOST)
I really like APC magazine and although I’m not technically savvy I do like the idea of having some idea of tech developments. I would love to be gutsy enough to try some coding (you had a nice series on Python) and an alternative to Windows/Office, but I’m worried I’ll stuff something up!
I also love your emphasis on privacy and consumer awareness. It would be great to see a list of apps that provide great services for no/reasonable permissions, as well as naming and shaming apps that are data-mining with ridiculous permissions. I’m never sure what they all mean, but I do know a torch app shouldn’t require any network connection or access to my contacts! Maybe a ‘love it and leave it’ app column, with alternatives? I’m on Android, but I suppose you should include info for Apple lovers too! I love the monthly app suggestions.
Really appreciate the backup stuff too — one of these days I’ll actually do it! (I’m on Windows 7.)
Lastly, I always see great subscription prices for Australians, but never an equivalent for those of us in New Zealand. I’d definitely try a 12-issue subscription for the same price that Aussies pay — any chance we may see that sometime? Tessa
Ed replies: Thanks for the kind words Tessa. We’ve coincidentally rounded up a selection of privacy-focused apps in this very issue (see page 48), covering a variety of different major uses.
Regarding subscription offers for New Zealand, it’s something we’d love to offer — and have looked into — but despite our seeming physical proximity, sending magazines across the pond significantly increases the costs of distribution. That means, if we were to offer the same subscription prices in NZ as AU, we’d be significantly in the red… and our publisher won’t let us to give away copies of the mag any more (even to the nicest readers ).
