HOW TO Enhance a portrait
01 GET STARTED WITH AI
We’ve zoomed in on this portrait to get a better view of the face. It’s not a bad result, but could use some tweaking to make it stand out. From the tool panel on the right, select Portrait mode, then the AI Portrait Enhancer section.
02 LIGHT AND EYES
Beginning with the Face Light slider, move to the right to cast more light only on the face, simulating better lighting. Then use the Eye Whitening and Enhancer sliders to make the subject’s eyes appear more striking.
03 CLEAR UP DARK CIRCLES
The Dark Circle removal tool is very effective, and won’t end up looking artificial even if used quite aggressively. The next tools, to change the shape of head and eyes, should be used carefully to avoid an exaggerated look.
04 LIPS, EYEBROWS AND TEETH
Eyebrow and Lip sliders are also great at subtly strengthening these features. Teeth whitening can be used when your subject’s teeth are visible. Again, avoid pushing this too far and appearing artificial.
05 SPECIAL EFFECTS
The High Key section is interesting as it affects the whole image, increasing contrast while desaturating and cooling the image a little. Try experimenting with these sliders to create a more modern, slick look.
06 DE-AGE A PORTRAIT
The Orton Effect section lets you dial in a more sympathetic, softening glow to a portrait but it’s easy to push this too far which can look slightly cheesy. Used sparingly it can help to reduce the appearance of a subject’s age.
07 REMOVE BLEMISHES
From the Canvas menu, select the Erase tool, or the Clone & Stamp tools, either of which can be used to remove blemishes. Set your brush size to cover a spot or mark on the subject and click Done to remove it.
08 CLEAR UP PROBLEMS
The AI Skin Enhancer tool should be used sparingly to avoid ‘over-softening’ your subject. The AI Skin Defects Removal box can be helpful if your subject has multiple areas of blemishes you want to remove in one go.
