Georgia FESTIVAL MUST-SEE: CHEESE (AND WINE) FESTIVALS EXPERIENCE CHEESE ( AND WINE) F E S T I VALS
October ( TBC)
Cheese and wine lovers – assemble! Every year, Georgia hosts their Cheese Festival, which is organised by the Georgian agricultural ministry. In 2015, the festival went international, drawing in outside cheesemakers from neighbouring Azerbaijan and Armenia. Visitors can sample hundreds of varieties of cheese: hard dambal-khacho, spicy guda cultivated in a sheepskin bag, tenili, and cheeses soaked in a variety of flavourants and spices. Cheesemakers showcase their ancient tools and methods used in the traditional modes of cheesemaking. Visitors also have the opportunity to sample Georgian wine and honey.
If you have the time, try and coordinate your trip to coincide with the Georgian Wine Festival, which also takes place in October in Tblisi. Georgia is home to one of the oldest wine regions in the world! The atmosphere is electric, with performances of Georgian music, national folk dances and a circulating troupe of mime artists.
The wine helps the mood, too.
