NIKON IMPROVES ITS D-SLR CONNECTIONS

-

tinker with its D-SLR line-up, particularly the entry-level models that are facing stiffer competition from mirrorless cameras. The new D5600 is essentially a minor update of the entry-level+ D5500 and gets a few new features, most notably a time-lapse movie function, Nikon’s ‘SnapBridge’ Bluetoothbased wireless communication system, and expanded touchscreen operations. Using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology, ‘SnapBridge’ allows for easier initial connections with mobile devices and then maintains that connection so image transfer can continue even after the camera has been turned off. The camera’s built-in WiFi now offers the convenience of easy NFC connectivity.

Beyond these additions, the D5600 is unchanged from the D5500, so it’s based on a 24.78 megapixels (total) ‘APS-C’ size CMOS sensor and Nikon’s ‘Expeed 5’ processor. The sensor goes without an optical low-pass filter (OPLF) to optimise its resolution, and the sensitivity range is equivalent to ISO 100 to 25,600. Continuous shooting is possible at up to 5.0 fps with the option of capturing either 12-bit or 14-bit RAW files or JPEGs at one of three levels of compression. Image files are stored on an SD memory card and the D5600 is UHS-I compliant for SDHC and SDXC types. Video is recorded at the Full HD resolution of 1920x1080 pixels at 50, 25 or 24 fps with stereo sound.

The key camera control systems are 39-point autofocusing (with nine cross-type arrays) and 2016-pixel RGB metering. The shutter speed range is 30-1/4000 second with flash sync up to 1/200 second. The D5600 has a built-in pop-up flash, up to +/-5.0 EV of exposure compensation, auto bracketing for exposure and white balance, a selection of special effect settings, Nikon’s ‘Active D-Lighting’ processing for contrast and exposure, and an 8.1 cm LCD monitor screen that’s adjustable for both swing and tilt.

The Nikon D5600 is available now and is priced at around $1099 with the AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G VR zoom lens. For more information visit www.mynikonlife.com.au
