…AND NOW THERE ARE 63!

-

SONY VERY QUICKLY followed up the announcement of the 60th FE mount lens with news of three new compact G series primes. The trio share the same styling and are the same size which, perfectly complements the more compact A7C full frame mirrorless camera body. The three are the FE 24mm f/2.8 G, the 40mm f/2.5 G and the 50mm f/2.5 G. All feature aluminium barrel tubes with weather sealing, a traditional aperture ring (with click-stopped to seamless adjustments) and internal focusing so the lens barrel doesn’t rotate or extend. All three also feature a customisable focus hold button and an AF/MF switch. The AF drive employs dual linear motors for smoothness and speed. The three compact primes are each just 45 millimetres in length with a diameter of 68 millimetres and all have a 49 millimetres diameter screwthread filter fitting.

The optical constructions vary slightly. Both the 40mm and 50mm employ nine elements in nine groups, but the 40mm’s system includes three aspherical types while the 50mm has two aspherical types plus one which has extra-low dispersion (ED) characteristics. The 24mm has eight elements in seven groups, which includes one ED type and three aspherical types. The difference in the optical constructions means the trio also vary slightly in weight although tip the scales at under 200 grams – the 24mm is 162 grams, the 40mm is 173 grams and the 50mm is 174 grams. The minimum focus distances vary with autofocusing or manual focusing operations – 24 or 18 centimetres respectively for the 24mm; 28 or 25 centimetres for the 40mm; and 35 or 32 centimetres for the 50mm.

Each of the new Sony FE mount G series compact primes is priced at $999 and all are available in Australia now. For more information visit www.sony.com.au
