BREAKING THE CYCLE

AG Society sponsorship sends Kate and her bike on a snow-bound Canadian trek.

-

DESPITE HAVING cycled the equivalent distance of twice around the world at the Equator, Kate Leeming has no plans of getting off her bike. In March this year she added 900km to her cycling total, battling extreme conditions in Canada’s Northwest and Yukon territories. Starting in Fort McPherson on the Dempster Highway she followed an ice road to Aklavik, before cycling cross-country to Shingle Point on the Beaufort Sea. Kate then followed ice roads across the Mackenzie River delta, firstly to Inuvik and finally to Tuktoyaktuk, the most northerly town accessible by road in Canada.

An impressive feat in itself, the Yukon cycle was actually training for Kate’s most ambitious expedition yet – Breaking the Cycle South Pole. Sponsored by the AG Society, Kate will cycle across Antarctica via the South Pole, commencing in November 2017. The expedition will run in support of the Breaking the Cycle education program and other outreach endeavours, aiming to prepare a generation of future leaders to make informed decisions for a sustainable world.
