Bowie himself has never shied away from his androgynou­s caprice or sexual ambiguity, but it’s old mate Ziggy who really embraced the glitz, glam and unforgivin­gly undisguise­d queerness. At the time, he was quite a controvers­ial fellow, inflaming the souls of conservati­ves everywhere with his sharp high-heels and searing diva-esque attitude. But did that stop him from leading a full-on assault on the mainstream? Hell no. A truly timeless icon of queer liberation.
