The VPI Avenger and Avenger Reference turntables, made entirely in the USA and the newest members of VPI’s ‘Reference’ turntable range are now available in Australia. Both models have a chassis made from bonding an aluminium plate between two slabs of acrylic, with damping material between the layers, all locked together by triple isolation steel corner posts, three bolts, and a massive bearing assembly. The corner posts, which also hold the tonearm(s), have adjustable machined knobs enabling users to easily adjust the height of the turntable, as well as level it. The corner posts connect to the cone stabilisers which sit in a machined Delrin/ball-bearing isolation base reminiscent of the system used on the VPI Prime turntable. The armboards fitted to the Avenger and Avenger Reference are made from 16mm-thick 6061-grade aluminium alloy and are fully adjustable. The Avenger comes fitted with a 254mm (10-inch) version of VPI’s ‘3D Printed’ tonearm, while the Avenger Reference comes with the 305mm (12-inch) version of this arm pre-fitted. Up to three arms can be mounted to both the Avenger and the Avenger Reference. ‘ The Avenger Reference also has additional features including an ADS external speed controller, a periphery ring clamp, and most notably VPI’s magnetic drive assembly which sees the platter spun by a sub-platter via magnets,’ said Cameron Pope, of Krispy Audio. ‘ And one should not forget that the VPI Avenger’s Reference line of turntables continues to feature the venerable Hot Rod (HR-X).’ Available now, the VPI Avenger retails for $14,995, the VPI Avenger Reference for $31,995 and the VPI HR-X for $22,995.
