Danish style specialist Bang & Olufsen has released its first pair of ‘wireless’ earphones—Beoplay H5—and they’re available in pink, with rose-coloured wiring. The seeming contradiction is because although the earphones get their signal wirelessly via Bluetooth 4.2 from your phone or portable device, the left and right ear-pieces are connected by a single wire which has an in-line controller that houses the electronics and allows control over volume, track selection, switching and more. The cable is enclosed in braided textile so that it’s comfortable against the skin, while the earphone housings themselves are made of textured rubber and polymer to resist sweat and moisture. A diamondcut radially-polished aluminium plate is mounted on top of each earpiece housing.

There’s a magnet in each earpiece, so when you’re not using them, the earphones and cable can be turned into a necklace by clicking the two earpieces together. Whenever you do this, the H5 automatically powers down to save battery life. When you are using the H5s you can use B&O’s free app to select between several different sound profiles to suit your musical tastes, or create your own individual sonic profile. The app also monitors the status of the earphones’ rechargeable battery, which B&O claims will give five hours of playback between charges.

Rather awkwardly, you need to use a dedicated B&O ‘cubic charger’ to charge the earphones, rather than just plugging in a USB cables. ‘ Beoplay H5 is the most versatile product we have ever made,’ said Henrik Taudorf Lorensen of B&O ‘ It is designed to be worn and used effortlessly, and with the integrated app to change the tonality of what you are listening to, it will be a device that enriches the everyday lives of people worldwide.’ Available now, the Beoplay H5 sells for $389 including a cubic charger and if pink is not your thing, you’ll be pleased to learn you can also get the H5s in black.
