Chopin
| The Legendary 1965 Recording | Martha Argerich | Parlophone/ Warner Stereo Vinyl
This is the first release on LP, the format for which the recording session was originally aimed. It became available on CD in 1999, but this legendary 1965 recording for first time makes it possible to enjoy a more natural piano sound, and none of the usual technical difficulties of pressing vinyl albums seem to affect this one: no pops, no ticks, no distortion… and no rumble whatsoever. Argerich’s performance of Chopin’s Piano Sonata 3—especially the fourth and final movement—leaves even Horowitz in the lurch, and is enthralling, as are her performances of the Nocturne No 4 and the Scherzo No. 3. Chopin’s three Mazurkas (36, 37 & 38) are taken at a danceable rate, without any slips, and you will probably never want to hear any other pianist play Chopin’s Polonaise No 6 after you hear this one. Absolutely amazing!
