We thought we had a scoop when we spotted a turntable bearing the familiar Master & Dynamic brand-name, as it would be first for a company that mostly specialises in headphones. (Possibly obvious, as the drive belt was incorrectly positioned on the pulley, as shown in the photograph above!) But it was not to be...
The Master & Dynamic turntable was very obviously just a re-badged VPI Player with a weird surface coating, but further investigation revealed that although it’s most definitely the very first turntable bearing the Master & Dynamic badge, only a very limited run of these special edition models will be available, and they’ll be reserved exclusively for use by Master & Dynamic distributors and dealers. That is, they won’t be available for sale.
In the same room, Master & Dynamic showed its MA770 Wireless Speaker which was identified as being a 2018 CES Innovation Awards Honoree. Made entirely of polished concrete, the MA770 features twin 100mm-diameter bass/midrange drivers with woven Kevlar cones and a single 38mm titanium dome tweeter. The drivers are normally protected by a steel grille, but if you, like me, prefer the raw concrete look, it’s easily removed. The drivers are powered by a 100-watt Class-D amplifier, whose input can be accessed wirelessly (Chromecast or Bluetooth) or via wire.
