LAST AUDIO RESEARCH REF 750 SEL

-

Audio Research says its current top-line monobloc amplifier, the 750 SEL, will be the last of the line. Not only that, but it says that only ten Reference 750 SEL monoblocs will be built and, once they’re sold, there will be no more.

The Audio Research Reference 750 SEL is rated with a power output of 750-watts into any load between 4Ω and 16Ω, via a custom-built output transformer and sixteen KT150 vacuum tubes whose bias is controlled by two additional KT150s. The –3dB points of the frequency response are listed as 1Hz and 200kHz. ‘Listening to a pair of Audio Research Reference 750 SEL monoblocs in a high-performance system is a transformative experience,’ said Philip Sawyer, of Synergy AudioVisual, ‘ the speakers disappear from the listening room and the listener is transported into a three-dimensional realm where music takes on a palpable, tangible form.’

Audio Research has also released a new version of its REF6 line-stage preamplifier, the REF6SE. Its circuit topology—a fully-balanced, Class-A design with a single gain stage using six 6H30 valves and no feedback—is the same as the previous model and it, too, has a valve-based (6H30 and 6550) regulated power supply. In fact, Audio Research says the many component and wiring upgrades inside the new REF6SE can be retro-fitted to the earlier REF6.

Available now, but only by special order, the Audio Research Reference 750 SEL monoblocs retail for $68,995 each. The new REF6SE retails for $28,995 and is available now. Contact Synergy AV for details about the procedures and costs involved in upgrading a REF6 to a REF6SE.
