REL LE CARBON SPECIAL
The Carbon Special is a new limited edition subwoofer from REL that features the UKbased company’s third-generation carbon fibre 305mm driver plus a new, bespoke CSP passive radiator that the company claims has 50mm more excursion than its previous passive design.
The amplifier inside the Carbon Special is a NextGen5 that’s rated with an output of 1,000-watts. It’s fitted with REL’s ‘CS PerfectFilter’. “The CS PerfectFilter inside the new Carbon Special is a custom-designed filter that improves both ends of the audio spectrum,” said Philip Sawyer, of Synergy Audio Visual, which distributes REL in Australia. “It delivers airy, delicate highs with greater reach into the nether regions within a soundstage, as well as truer, more powerful, ultra-low bass.”
REL’s new driver is the third generation of the company’s ‘BlackWidow’ design, whose 305mm diameter carbon fibre cone is specified as having a 100mm excursion capability. “Developed to deliver superior dynamic balance, this latest implementation of this famous design is able to handle the massive power needed to deliver explosive dynamics, smoothly and effortlessly,” said Sawyer.
Unlike all other REL subwoofers, the aesthetics of the Carbon Special feature a subtle use of carbon fibre details sprinkled among chrome and polished stainless accents, plus the cabinet is deeper than REL’s previous designs, reportedly necessary to optimise the performance of the new driver complement.
