Tips for any kitchen renovation

Australian House & Garden - - Advice -

Layout “Renovating is your chance to produce a really good layout. Apply the work triangle, in which the sink, cooktop and fridge are placed at the points of a regular triangle; the more evenly they are placed, the more functional the kitchen. People sometimes mistakenly push the cooktop right up to the fridge cabinet or right up to the pantry cupboard, which becomes really impractical when you are trying to turn pot handles. Ideally, the space between the cooktop and another item should be at least 60cm.” CB

Cupboards vs drawers “Include as many drawers as possible – they are practical, simple to use, and allow easy access to the base of the kitchen without having to get down on your hands and knees to find that missing Tupperware lid. Drawer runners should ideally be soft-close; they do cost a bit more, but I believe they are a wise investment.” JT

Electricals “Easily accessible outlets for the microwave and small appliances such as the kettle and toaster are a must.” Rebecca Mair (aka Bec Sparky), electrician, Clipsal by Schneider Electric; www.clip Bench height/depth “A height of 90-92cm is usually comfortable, but a tall family might go as high as 95cm. I try to install 70cm-deep benchtops to really maximise working space, especially in spaces where depth is available but length is restricted.” SH

Flat-pack cabinetry “Assemble flat-pack cabinetry yourself, then hire a licensed carpenter for two days to install it properly. At the same time, they can install all your benchtops, cupboard handles and other fittings. Some carpenters can also do the tiling of your splashback. For two days you’ll be looking at about $1000 (including GST).” CB

‘If you live in a colder climate, underfloor heating under tiles or polished concrete is a must.’ Derrick Macrae
