Ceramicist Emma Young in her arty Sydney terrace.
Ceramicist, Young Vessels+Objects
Emma’s Edwardian terrace in inner Sydney is home to a vast collection of artworks, handcrafted pieces, and wares both modern and vintage.
MY FAVOURITE THINGS
Table and chairs I inherited the table from a former flatmate and bought the chairs at Lawson’s auction house.
Vases (on table) ‘Hand-built’ Young Vessels+Objects pieces.
Artwork It’s from a paper-cut series by my friend, artist Oliver Watts. I used to work in a studio alongside him. Sideboard From Grandfathers Axe. Vessels (on
sideboard) Some of the first things I ever made. They’re imperfect, but I hang on to them for sentimental reasons. They hold my carving tools, which belonged to my grandfather.
MY LOCAL HAUNTS
I first came across Danish brand Hay in Copenhagen and hauled some of their blankets and rugs back to Australia, so I was very pleased when they opened in Surry Hills. Nearby in Redfern is another lovely shop, Chee Soon & Fitzgerald, where I bought the first of what turned out to be many – possibly too many – Marimekko cushions. Surry Hills and nearby suburbs also have a great range of dining options, particularly 121BC, Vacanza, Longrain and Kepos & Co.
