Purple power

From soft violet to deep burgundy, purple plants were a designer favourite.

A lush tapestry of green and burgundy plants greeted visitors to the Echelon garden (above), a silver awardwinner designed by Mark Browning of Cycas Landscape Design. Adding vibrant splashes of purple to the planting scheme were Heuchera ‘Forever Purple’, H. ‘Black Taffeta’, H. ‘Obsidian’ and the darker tones of Euphorbia ‘Black Bird’. Meanwhile, fellow landscape designer Charlie Albone used Salvia (right) for purple highlights in his garden (see page 120). Instyle Gardens chose the burgundy foliage of Alternanthera ‘Little Ruby’ to adorn the front wall of its display (below right). And Brent Reid of Candeo Design used flowering Limonium ‘Perezii Blue’ in his lush Metropolis entry (left and below left). >

MARK BROWNING, CYCAS LANDSCAPE DESIGN ‘I have a passion for mixing burgundy and green. Those tones complemented and softened this hardscaping palette of greys, blacks and white. The beautiful foliage is the hero… I love to use plants that are not reliant on flowering.’
