An outback palette for an urban bedroom.

New horizons beckon in this inspired earth-meets-sky design for the main bedroom of a Sydney home.

Colour clues While grey-blue walls with a cloud-like white trim create an ethereal quality, the scheme is grounded by the deep red in the rug and rich ochre of the curtains. It’s like an outback horizon where sky and earth seem to meet. “The combinatio­ns are not predictabl­e but they’re complement­ary,” says Juliette. Walls in Taubmans Stone Age. Pane relief Falling elegantly to the floor, the window treatments add a sense of luxury and create visual unity. These dual-tone curtains, made by Simple Studio in a Designs of the Time linen from Elliott Clarke, hang from a simple rod that doesn’t upstage the elegant cornice. Softly does it A Persian rug from Robyn Cosgrove adds softness to the original timber floor.

The rich, warm colour and intricate pattern draw the eye but don’t detract from the overall feeling of calm.

Abstract thought Artwork lends a personal touch to a private space. You can use it as the starting point of your scheme or to draw together diverse strands of colour and pattern. Doing the job beautifull­y is an abstract painting by Hitesh Natalwala. Light industry Avoid glary downlights. Instead, choose subtle lighting solutions such as this elegant Gubi ‘Bestlite BL1’ table lamp from Cult. A design feature in itself, it’s a joy to wake up to. Sleepy buys An oversized bed creates a sumptuous focal point and also serves a practical purpose because the owners wanted “a bed big enough for all the family”, says Juliette. They chose the B&B Italia ‘Febo’ bed and, to go with it, the Cassina ‘P22’ chair and ‘194 9’ marble side table, all from Space.

The textured bedcover, custom-made in Sette ‘Kampala’ jacquard linen, is from South Pacific Fabrics. Layer it There’s a complex interplay of pattern and texture here. The geometric bedspread alludes to the intricate Persian rug, but in a simple way. Meanwhile, the mix of linen, leather, timber and wool reinforce the relaxed feeling. The marble side table is a luxury touch.
