Raising the bar in food-court design is Level One in the iconic Chifley building in Sydney’s CBD. Architecture and design practice SJB, together with project partner Rice Daubney Architects, has thrown down the gauntlet to drab, garishly lit food halls everywhere with this recent refurbishment. The dramatic concept draws inspiration from much-loved public buildings like The Guggenheim art museum in New York and Le Bon Marché department store in Paris. On-trend brass accents, a backlit decorative ceiling, fluted dark timbers, timeless black and white marble and moody green tones make up a scheme sympathetic to the Art Deco styling of the building. It serves to turn a regular weekday lunchbreak into an out-of-the-ordinary experience. sjb.com.au
