YOUR H&G
I’m eight months into a renovation project – with at least four more to go – living on site with my husband, two teenagers, a dog and a fish. The situation calls for a lot of patience, especially when I finish mopping the floor and turn to see a fresh new set of plaster-dust footprints. Aargh! But once a month, serenity arrives… I take a deep breath, put on the kettle (or make a G&T) and disappear into the pages of H&G. Your magazine reminds me that, one day, someone might ooh and ahh over my house. In the meantime, those prints can wait. Tracey McGown, Bulimba, Queensland
Pop-up page
Loved the May issue, especially the Design Moment column on the humble toaster. It brought back memories of my childhood in the ’70s. We had to turn the bread in our old toaster manually and, needless to say, it nearly always got burnt. I remember how excited we were to get a pop-up model. My siblings and I would argue over which setting was best. Ah, the days of simple fun before smartphones! Beth Lucena, Highett, Victoria
Nanna knows best
When I moved into my home three years ago and needed some decorating help, my wonderful nanna came to the rescue with decades of H&G clippings. I fell in love with an image of a white fireplace that was adorned with a line of blue medicine bottles; straightaway, I could see it as a feature in my guestroom. Nanna secretly collected a set of similar bottles for me and now I think of her each time I walk into that room. Thank you for inspiring her for more than 50 years. I feel connected to her each time a new issue arrives, and I hope that one day I can pass on some of that creativity. Emmi Moore, Victoria Park, WA
Urban plight
The Changing Suburbs story (June) was a welcome discussion about the future of our cities and how we, as a community, respond to the need to grow sustainably. Australians are rightly concerned that our future quality of life is at risk. H&G has shown great leadership by reporting on urban developments such as the WestConnex and Roe 8 motorways, and through your involvement in the My Ideal House competition. Thanks for drawing our attention to these important issues. Rachael Mitchell, Booragoon, WA
