MEET THE MAKER

- Atolyia products are available at Hardtofind; hardtofind.com.au.

A love for the craft and culture of Turkey led Verity Kizek (above) and her husband Shenol to launch artisan textile label Atolyia. Where does the name come from? Atolyia comes from atölye, the Turkish word for atelier. It perfectly expresses our ethos: focus on the maker, the design and the skill that goes into creating the product. What are you hoping to achieve? I want to share the heritage of Turkish textiles, as well as produce something that’s practical and beautiful and will last. I also want to showcase the fabric and the work that goes into making it. What does your process look like? It can start with a type of weave or traditional textile (such as a kilim), or can result from a practical need, like a fast-drying towel for the beach. I send my designs to producers, who make up samples for us to check, test and adjust if needed, to ensure it matches our concept and our ethos.
