Transforming a tired laundry on a budget.
Sydney couple Rhonda and Piers Maunder moved into their home more than 10 years ago. Even then, the laundry was crying out for an update but other home improvements took precedence. The laundry, located on the lower ground floor close to the couple’s pool and outdoor entertaining area, also contained guest bathroom facilities, so the long-anticipated update became a priority. “We entertain outdoors a lot so we wanted a room that functioned as both bathroom and laundry, but also looked good without spending a fortune,” says Rhonda.
She and Piers opted for a DIY makeover, turning to Kaboodle Kitchen from Bunnings for the cabinetry. “We liked Kaboodle because the cabinets were solid, good value and easy to assemble,” says Rhonda. Space was tight (2x3 metres) so they figured lining up all the key elements – laundry appliances, toilet, vanity – along one wall would be the best configuration. They selected front-opening appliances to create an area of clear workspace, installing overhead cupboards for all-important storage.
Doorfronts from Kaboodle’s popular thermoformed range in Antique White, teamed with a Think Solid compositestone benchtop in Bianca, give the room a classic look and were easily sourced from Bunnings. The mirrored splashback was a suggestion from the plumber. Rhonda is thrilled with the result. “I love the mirrored splashback – it makes the room look bigger and it reflects a lot of green from the garden.”
Rhonda chose a butler’s sink for the vanity and Piers watched a Youtube video for some tips on fitting it into the cabinetry. It worked – and now they have a welcoming space for guests.
“I’m no longer embarrassed to have guests use this room,” says Rhonda. “Doing laundry is much easier now too; everything is arranged in a more functional way – laundry detergent is above the washing machine, the bench is great for folding clothes, and the room has a generally nicer vibe.”
