Nothing says class like a 1964 Jaguar E-Type roadster. Enzo Ferrari rated it the most beautiful car ever made – and who could argue with him? Celebrity chef and nutritionist Zoe Bingley-Pullin is lucky enough to have the keys to this classic British beauty.

Zoe and her car-enthusiast husband, entrepreneur and personal trainer Michael Ryan, have a staggering collection of 18 classic cars, including an iconic 1956 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. She says the E-Type Jag is her favourite.

The couple’s love of vintage runs right through their Sydney home, shared with six-year-old daughter Emily and cats Ruby and Scarlet. The beachy two-storey home is peppered with a fascinating collection of historical pieces, including a tactile 120-year-old shearer’s table.

Have you always appreciated cars?

Absolutely. My dad is a pilot and my brother and I grew up hearing aeroplane and engineering talk. That really rubbed off on us.

I saw my first E-Type Jag when I was 16. It was British Racing Green and our glamorous lady neighbour was behind the wheel. She looked like a dream driving down the road. In my mind I was like: “That’s what I want!”

Why is it your favourite?

It’s so well crafted. You can tell by the aerodynamics that it’s not only able to go fast but also move in a sensual way.

The Jag is taken out every month. It’s a real occasion car, a pleasure cruise, not something you jump into for a little spin around the neighbourhood. I need to be in a confident mood to drive it!

“I’m yet to find a modern car that I would call my dream car but if I had to choose, it would probably be the Jaguar F-Type convertible.” Zoe Bingley-Pullin

Do people stop to comment when you’re driving the E-type?

Interestingly, a lot of people stop me to say hello when I’m driving our Kombi. When I drive the Jag, however, people stop and stare but don’t approach me. There is no ego involved in purchasing our cars. Michael and I are more passionate about their provenance and restoring them to their authentic state.

Is there another car on your wish list?

I have had lots of experience driving fast, powerful cars. I’m yet to find a modern car that I would call my dream car but if I had to choose, it would probably be the Jaguar F-Type convertible.

Tell us about your home...

I wanted to create a haven of tranquility for us, a retreat from the bustle of the city and our busy lives. There’s a very peaceful courtyard near the entrance that features a beautiful Japanese maple. Ten years ago, it was tiny and was in a pot at my

mother’s house; Mum’s unwell so we moved it here and it has blossomed. It’s quite architectural in shape and, of course, very special to me since it was my mum’s.

I also love the outdoor living area. Emily is now at the age where I can sit there with a cup of tea while watching her splash around in the pool rather than having to be in the water with her. The eucalyptuscoloured chair, a present from Michael, is my favourite piece in the space. The throws and pillows are imported from Mexico by my sister-in-law.

Interior highlights?

My mother was an interior designer and I think I’ve inherited her eye for detail. The exquisite kilim rugs from Cadrys are a favourite element – they elevate any room.

In the dining area, we have a wonderful 120-year-old shearer’s table. I just love its history – it even has people’s initials carved into it. Amazing.

We have a few nostalgic Cinzano promotional pieces too. The poster (pictured opposite) is original and was a present from me to Michael. There’s also an apron that belonged to Michael’s grandfather, who used to import Cinzano to Australia. How’s that for history! @EliseElliott_Media @WhichCar WhichCar TV airs Channel 10, 4pm Sundays. For more expert motoring advice, go to WhichCar.com.au.
