Sea change
From the day’s ocean catch to locally farmed produce, Wellington’s best restaurateurs have plenty of wow on their plates.
Ortega Fish Shack is a favourite destination for Wellingtonians who appreciate good food.
Chef and co-owner Mark Limacher is as hospitable as he is talented and his family-run business has been a stalwart of the city’s food scene for many years. Despite the name, it’s certainly no shack. Imbued with charm, the humble restaurant in a quiet street in Mount Victoria is well worth a visit (be sure to look out for his father-in-law’s artwork above the restaurant). Mark prides himself on sourcing the freshest of New Zealand seafood and produce to make a meal to remember – and come back for.
Hiakai is one of the city’s newest stars and has fast garnered global attention. Chef and owner Monique Fiso challenged the norm by being the first in New Zealand to open a restaurant using indigenous ingredients. With a swag of awards and accolades under her belt, the restaurant is an incredible credit to her determination to create a food experience that acknowledges her Maori and Samoan roots and has a sustainable focus. Plan and book well ahead to enjoy a taste of Hiakai. Rita in Aro Valley is so incredibly lovely you won’t want to leave. Kelda Hains is true to her word, creating a menu and dishes inspired by home cooking and what’s in season from local farmers (as well as her own kitchen garden, tucked up the hill behind the narrow timber cottage). With just 28 seats, it truly is like stepping into a local’s dining room. Charley Noble is a restaurant and bar in one of Wellington’s most historic buildings, once the offices of the city’s Huddart Parker Shipping Line. Get cosy inside with the wood-fired oven inspiring a menu that features plenty of local seafood and produce. Plus, there’s natural wine and local craft beers to match.
