LIFE & STYLE
Sophie Davies shares some firsts and favourite things…
FIRST ADULT HOME? Kensington, in west London. I moved to London when I was 22 and shared an apartment with friends – I didn’t realise at the time that I was moving out of home for good! BUCKET-LIST DESTINATION? Here in Australia, it would have to be The Kimberley in WA. I would also love to travel to Egypt to see the Pyramids (3). A cruise down the Nile would be nice too! But there are so many places I would like to visit that it’s hard to choose one. DREAM RESTAURANT TABLE? Somewhere on a cliff overlooking the water in the Mediterranean, with great food shared with interesting and inspiring people.
DREAM CAR? An electric Range Rover (7).
FAVOURITE ARTISTS? I love all the Impressionists – Monet (8), Renoir, Degas, Cezanne, Sorolla – for their ability to capture light and fleeting instances of 19th-century life. You can’t beat a good still-life by a Renaissance artist either. Locally, I love the work of
Aida Tomescu, Daniel Boyd and Jahnne Pasco-White (5). Internationally, I love Struan Teague, Joaquim Chancho,
Gideon Rubin, Yayoi Kusama – the list goes on!
I’M INSPIRED BY THE DESIGN WORK OF... Frances Elkins, Syrie Maugham, Serge Roche, David Hicks (4), Frank Lloyd Wright, Jørn Utzon, Jean-Michel Frank, Axel Einar Hjorth, Alberto Giacometti (6), Ingo Maurer, George Nakashima... I know there are many more that I am forgetting right now!
I LOVE TO COOK… Pasta – a good bolognaise or arrabbiata are my favourites – or a slow-cooked casserole. When I have time to bake, I go for a good apple crumble or a strawberry tart.
I’M CURRENTLY READING… Sapiens by Yuval Noah Harari. FAVOURITE FRAGRANCE? Baccarat Rouge 540 by Maison Francis Kurkdjian (2).
I LOVE A VASE FULL OF… Peonies (1).
FAVOURITE MOVIE? Anything that really moves me. The Theory of Everything left me speechless – I cried all the way through it. Otherwise a good rom-com like Notting Hill or Four Weddings and a Funeral.
I AM COVETING… Some 1930s sterling silver martini glasses or antique silver goblets. I would like a full set of six or 12, so finding just the right ones is proving a challenge!
NEXT MAJOR PURCHASE FOR THE HOME? A new sofa.
I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT… My son.
“I LOVE THE IMPRESSIONISTS FOR THEIR ABILITY TO CAPTURE THE LIGHT.”
