F1-flavoured fest
What really got the blood pumping at the Sydney Retro Speedfest was a display of legendary Formula 1 and single-seat cars, the biggest we’ve seen at a local Historic meeting. The display included Alan Jones’s 1980 Williams FW07, Gerhard Berger’s Benetton-BMW, Eddie Cheever’s Arrows, Stefan Johansson’s Ferrari F185, a March 731, a 1972/’73 Surtees TS9B and Jack Brabham’s World Championship Brabham. Most of these cars were unleashed for demonstration runs – and no putting around behind the pace car either, they were going for it. The open-wheelers were joined by a couple of great Can-Am sports cars (one Matich and a Donohue Lola). The sounds were epic. The event was a joint project of the Australian Racing Drivers’ Club and the Historic Sports and Racing Car Association (HSRCA).
